What Is Scrap Metal Recycling?

It’s a great question! At its heart, scrap metal recycling is the process of recovering and processing old, discarded metal from products or structures so it can be reintroduced as a raw material for creating brand new goods.

Think about it: metal is everywhere! It’s in your old washing machine, the clunker car sitting out back, leftover pipes from a plumbing job, old wiring, aluminum cans, construction debris, and so much more. When these items reach the end of their useful life, the metal they contain doesn’t just disappear. It’s still valuable!

How it Works

Instead of letting that metal sit in a landfill (where it takes up space and its value is lost), scrap recycling gives it a new lease on life. Here’s a simplified look at how it generally works:

1. Collection: Individuals, businesses, and demolition crews gather unwanted metal items. This is where you come in when you bring your scrap to us!
2. Sorting: The different types of metals are separated. A big distinction is between ferrous metals (like iron and steel, which are magnetic) and non-ferrous metals (like aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel – these aren’t magnetic).
3. Processing: Depending on the metal and its form, it gets processed. This might involve shredding (like with our massive shredder facility!), shearing (cutting into smaller pieces), or baling (compressing). This makes it easier to handle and melt.
4. Melting: The processed scrap is melted down in large furnaces.
5. Purifying: The molten metal is purified to remove contaminants and ensure it meets quality standards.
6. Solidifying: The purified, molten metal is cooled and solidified into shapes like bars, ingots, or sheets.
7. New Products: This recycled metal is then sent to manufacturers to be used as raw material for making brand new products – maybe parts for new cars, appliances, building materials, or even more cans!

Why is this so important?
